FAQ

Q: When are lessons available?

A: Sharon gives lessons mornings, afternoons and evenings on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. On weekends, she teaches in the mornings.

Q: What equipment do I need to start lessons?

A: Students need boots with at least a half-inch heel, long pants and a riding helmet. Students are welcome to use our helmets for their first couple of lessons or if they forget theirs at home. While riding breeches and tall boots really do help you ride, they are not needed when you first start. Gloves are great in cold weather, and dangling jewelry is not recommended.

Q: Do I need my own horse to take lessons?

A: No. For each student, Spiritwood provides a horse and all the equipment the horse needs. If you have your own horse, you can board it at Spiritwood or trailer it in for your lessons.

Q: What are your school horses like?

A: Spiritwood horses are well trained and experienced at helping riders learn the art of horsemanship.

Q: Can I take lessons without jumping?

A: Certainly. There are lots of skills for a rider to learn without ever going over a jump.

Q: How soon do I need to be at the stable before my lesson starts?

A: Students should be at the stable about 30 minutes before their lesson to prepare their horse for riding.

Q: Do you teach lessons after dark.

A: Yes. Our large arena is well lighted..

Q: Do lessons go ahead if it's raining?

A: If it's only drizzling, Sharon may have her students ride. If she deems it unsafe -- due to lightning or slippery footing -- or it's raining hard, she may cancel the lesson or change it to a barn lesson.

Q: What is a barn lesson?

A: A barn lesson covers some aspect of horsemanship or horse care. Students are not mounted.

Q: Can I come and watch a lesson before I sign up for one?

A: Absolutely. Spiritwood welcomes visitors, and it's a good way to let us introduce ourselves to you.

Q: What does Spiritwood ask of visitors and clients to promote a safe environment?

A: Safety is our priority. For this reason, we don't permit alcohol or smoking in the barn area. Also, dogs are not permitted on the premises.
